What is Source of Truth?
The authoritative system or database designated as the primary reference for specific data, ensuring consistency across all integrated systems.
Establishing a source of truth is critical for data governance. When the same data exists in multiple systems, one must be designated as authoritative. For example, your ERP might be the source of truth for billing data while HubSpot is the source of truth for marketing engagement data. When conflicts arise in bidirectional sync, the source of truth wins. Organizations often use field-level sources of truth - different systems own different fields on the same record.
